That was one of the first moments where I was like, This is not what I thought I was picking up. And it really is all building up to the final pages of the story, which felt like the way that story had to end. You treat it differently if its got a name. Summary. I want to start by asking about some of the stories that were contributing to the leaf mould for you, as you were writing and coming up with characters and the plot line. Andrew Peterson: I have been feeling that, but then when I think about it in terms of eucatastrophe, I get this glimmer of hope, and I go, Oh man, the author of the story has this amazing ending in mind. And whether or not we see it in our generation, or it happens later, we trust that the author of the story is good. If I cant appeal to either the creative or the theological reasoning part of your brain, then my last resort, the big guns is the anti-book. Theyre horrifying. Jake Meador:Right. But you cant just bury them forever; you still have to confront it. So this goes back to something I heard someone say probably 10 or 12 years ago. Peterson describes his story as epic like Lord of the Rings, witty like the Princess Bride and truth-telling like the Chronicles of Narnia. Janner sighed and looked back at her with a heavy sadness. He doesnt have a degree, but he knows George MacDonald about as well as anybody I know, and is just this really wise, wise man, and I remember at the time I was going through a lot of things, struggling with a lot of shame and self-loathing, and Id have a breakdown, and I remember one night in particular for some reason calling him, at midnight, and kind of weeping into the phone, and he just soothed me with the gospel, reminded me what was true, and he talked a lot about names in that conversation in a way I hadnt heard before. So, thats the first answer to the question: it was just pulp fantasy, followed by a slowly-increasing discernment for what good literature was. The food sometimes just magically appears, but theres no evidence of farming implements or vineyards or anything; everybodys just kind of hanging out in this world and theyve got food. If divinity is mentioned, the gods are more like Greek, Roman, Norse, or Egyptian gods: Gods who worship their stomachs. You see what Nias greatest fears are, and she has to also confront those. So I guess Im just curious about how you can retain this gentleness even as you do practice a kind of prophetic speech. I think Philip Pullman said it. Jake Meador: Yeah. Andrew Peterson: But a character like Gnag the Nameless, who has not yet transformed, hes still got this spark of humanity in him, so I needed there to be some real reason for it. Jake Meador:I laughed aloud at the barbers name in On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness. But other than the cruel Fangs and the constant threat of death and torture, there wasnt much to fear in Skree. He sat down, and leaned against the wall while Sara grabbed the bandages. If we meet any Fangs, I want you women to be safe. And since Mr. Andrew Peterson *Throws a very, very, annoyed look in his direction* is not going to tell us if Janner Igiby Wingfeather lives or not (I believe he does. The Fangs arent that way, because the Fangs have mostly given up their humanity. The hope that Janner had revived Sara, and sparked a revolution as she was determined to lead a rebellion that would escape the factory. Fortunately, the epilogue makes it better by implying that Kalmar has found a way to bring him back to life. He disappeared for years after the Great War and little is known about what happened to him before he resurfaced in Glipwood under the name of Peet the Sock Man After helping free Janner, she was put in the coffin again. At the beginning of the story Janner is twelve, Kalmar (whose nickname is Tink) is eleven, and their little sister Leeli is nine. The first book was first published in 2008 and in 2020 all the books were re-released in a special edition hardcover. That was so sweet, one of the sweetest love stories Ive ever heard. But is Wingfeather a Christian book? I didnt care about their spaceships when they blew up. And so, whether that means me interpreting some look or the way a friend said a thing, and then, and at midnight Im lying in bed and Ive constructed this whole false narrative about how they hate me, and how Ive ruined everything, and Why did they say that thing like that?
